Arlington Bus Stop Public Art Project

BostonBRT, the Town of Arlington, and Arlington Public Art [link] invited 10 artists to submit design proposals for a temporary public art project to raise awareness for the Town’s bus lane pilot project [link to Arlington pilot page].  The public art raised visibility and excitement for the pilot by landmarking five bus shelters (one per artist) and activating the bus route with vibrant art for two months. The designs were connected through imagery and palette. The themes were:

  • Nature, stewardship and environmental sustainability

  • Journeys and transportation

  • Speed and movement

  • Community and neighborhood

  • Humor and a sense of play

Artists were asked that their designs engage people at three levels of experience: cars driving by quickly, pedestrians passing by, and bus riders waiting at the shelter.

At the launch of the pilot, in addition to MBTA buses, ArlingtonBRT-branded pedicabs transported visitors to view the installations.  ArlingtonBRT postcards and t-shirts were given away to bus riders and the local community. The initiative was actively promoted on BostonBRT social media.
