Flowerbomb

What if bus stops were a beautiful place to be?

To promote and raise awareness for the 2018 BRT pilot in Everett, BostonBRT introduced the “flowerbomb”: a floral immersion of the School Street bus stop in Everett Square, the heart of downtown Everett. BostonBRT wanted to give back to bus riders by providing them with a moment of joy while waiting for the bus.

The flowerbomb was activated just after the debut on Broadway Street of the state’s first level-boarding platform, allowing commuters to step on and off buses quickly and much like a subway. Everett had previously launched a bus-only lane in 2016.

Following the bus stop immersion, leftover flower bouquets were given to commuters, police officers, bus drivers, car drivers, nearby businesses, and many more passersby. Everyone who received a bouquet was asked to take a picture at the bus stop, with images then posted to BostonBRT social media accounts to highlight and humanize the multitudes of people who ride the bus, a constituency too often ignored.

The concept was conceived by Ad Hoc Industries, led by Adrian Gill, and built by Krissy Price, a local Boston florist, Instagram influencer, and Best of Boston winner. The Instagram-friendly approach created interest and engaged the local community as well as Greater Boston. The activation was well-covered by the media and on social media as visitors posted imagery and videos to their own social media accounts.
