About BostonBRT

BRT Pilot Branding

BRT Pilot Branding

Boston is a region of firsts. From the beginning, Greater Boston has played a groundbreaking role in America’s transit history, with the first chartered ferries, first subway system, and strategic investments in public transportation in the 1960s.

But today, our system faces serious challenges, from aging infrastructure to increasing threats from climate change to the nation’s worst traffic congestion. Urgent action is needed to bring our transit system into the 21st century and regain our world-class transportation standing.

BostonBRT is an effort to bring Gold Standard bus rapid transit (BRT) to Greater Boston as a needed solution to move more people more efficiently and equitably. BRT can help solve our region’s congestion crisis and connect communities in new ways. BRT also reduces carbon emissions and improves air quality by people leaving their car keys at home to ride reliable, modern, and comfortable public transportation.

Launched in 2013, BostonBRT has sparked energy and excitement around world-class bus service in the region – including by testing pieces of BRT on local streets in partnership with cities and towns and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).

Our goal? A future commute that includes a Gold Standard BRT system that gets people where they need to go and is a delight to use.

BostonBRT is managed by the Institute for Transportation & Development Policy (ITDP) with support from the Barr Foundation.
