Reimagine Broadway
Better public transportation, with more choices, is an important way we can take care of each other as we face the challenges of COVID-19 together. Less necessary parking creates flexibility to build more affordable housing for families and seniors.
Lighter traffic means everyone can more reliably get to work on time --- and kids and older adults can feel safer on our streets. Public transportation, cycling, and walking create cleaner air and help our city stay healthy.
We’ve already seen how our Broadway dedicated bus lane and elevated bus boarding have improved thousands of people’s commutes. Starting in the month of October 2020, we’re planning to test a series of new ideas to help everyone get where they need to go safely and efficiently.
Keep an eye out for these improvements:
More dedicated bus lanes
Thre will be more dedicated bus lanes to create faster, less crowded commutes for essential workers and bring Everett closer to Gold Standard BRT. Throughout the pandemic, Broadway buses have remained some of the busiest in the MBTA system, serving Everett residents commuting throughout the region.
We can support our friends and neighbors working these critical jobs by separating buses from car traffic, allowing for more frequent service and preventing crowding on board and at the station.
LOCATIONS: Inbound and outbound peak hours, curbside from Sweetster Circle to Glendale Square (inbound) or Chelsea St (outbound); also around Sweetster Circle
Parklets
Parklets to transform underutilized parking and asphalt space into mini urban oases – with benches and shade – for anyone to sit, socialize, and get fresh air.
LOCATIONS: Glendale Square and Norwood Ave
Placemaking
“Distance of Care” measures with artistically designed educational markers to visually indicate where people can stand, sit, or walk to maintain safe distances at bus stops and on sidewalk.
Mobility Hubs
Mobility Hubs located at Glendale Square and Everett Square, featuring additional bike parking, BlueBikes stations, street amenities, multilingual pedestrian wayfinding and business signage, and real-time shuttle information. These hubs will give riders more choices to access jobs, child care, grocery stores, and other key services.
Activation
Ride Safely Care Packages are shared with bus riders including masks, hand sanitizer and a postcard with transit safety tips.
Shared Streets
Shared Streets that limit and slow down car traffic to allow kids and families to play outside while creating safe walking and biking connections to Broadway. We’re also supporting new “streateries” to allow more space for outdoor restaurant dining.
